Using spruce as firewood. Is spruce good firewood for a fireplace or wood gasifier? In this video, I'll discuss the topic of spruce as firewood. Spruce as firewood has advantages, such as its low price. It's also advantageous for kindling, as it's well-suited for starting fires. Furthermore, spruce produces a beautiful flame and therefore looks good in a fireplace with a glass door. However, spruce as firewood also has disadvantages. The biggest and most well-known disadvantage is its low calorific value. While spruce is generally considered a softwood, softwoods burn with a large flame, but spruce doesn't burn particularly long. Additionally, burning spruce can produce sparks, which are undesirable in an open fireplace. Due to the resin in spruce, the glass in a fireplace with a glass door can become coated with a black film of soot. Storing spruce as firewood is not problematic, but care should be taken not to store it for too long, as worms and beetles often infest spruce and can damage it, thus reducing its calorific value. On the other hand, spruce firewood has the advantage of not requiring long storage times. Often, 1 to 2 years of storage is sufficient before it can be used in a fireplace.
