These erosive-resistant headlands near Newport Beach, CA, USA at Crystal Cove State Park are made of andesite and exhibit a columnar jointing pattern. The original magma contracted while it cooled creating a repeating jointing pattern commonly referred to as columnar jointing. Other famous examples of columnar jointing can be found at Devil's Postpile near Mammoth Lakes, CA, USA, Giant's Causeway in N. Ireland and Devil's Tower in Wyoming, USA.
