Clean and Purify Your Home

In Hindu tradition, cleanliness is associated with sanctity and purity. Before Diwali, thoroughly clean every corner of your home, eliminating dust, cobwebs, and clutter. This act is symbolic of clearing away negativity and obstacles, preparing a welcoming space for the goddess. Many people perform a deep clean, scrubbing walls, organizing rooms, and even discarding or donating items that are no longer in use. This process is known as “Diwali safai,” and it also signifies the purification of the mind and soul.

Additionally, sprinkle holy water (like Ganga Jal) in all rooms. This ritual purifies the environment, encouraging positive energy to flow freely. Some people also burn incense or fragrant herbs to add to the purity and sanctity of the space.

2. Set Up the Altar or Puja Room
Choose a clean, quiet, and calm area of your home to set up a special altar for Maa Mahalakshmi. Arrange a beautiful idol or image of the goddess on a clean cloth or silver plate, and adorn the area with fresh flowers, preferably marigold and lotus flowers, which are dear to Mahalakshmi. Place an oil lamp (Diya) in front of the image to signify light and guidance.

A traditional brass or silver Kalash (pot) filled with water, mango leaves, and a coconut on top can also be placed as an auspicious symbol of abundance. Arrange fruits, sweets, and other offerings to invite her divine presence and blessings.

3. Light Diyas and Decorate with Rangoli
Lighting diyas (oil lamps) during Diwali holds immense importance, as light is associated with goodness, hope, and the dispelling of darkness. Begin by lighting a diya in the altar room or near the entrance, symbolizing that Maa Mahalakshmi is welcome in your home.

A Rangoli, a traditional Indian art form made of colored powders, rice, or flower petals, is another essential element. Create a beautiful Rangoli at the entrance or near the altar. These vibrant patterns symbolize the beauty and warmth of a welcoming home, believed to attract the goddess and her blessings. Designs with symbols like lotus, Swastik, and Shree are especially popular, as they represent divine prosperity and luck.

4. Perform Lakshmi Puja with Devotion
On Diwali evening, gather the family for Lakshmi Puja, a sacred ritual dedicated to Maa Mahalakshmi. Perform this puja during the auspicious time (Muhurat) prescribed for that year, typically after sunset.

Place a clean cloth in front of the idol or image and offer fresh flowers, sweets, and fruits.
Light a diya and incense sticks, creating a fragrant, soothing atmosphere.
Recite the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam, Lakshmi Chalisa, or other prayers to invoke her blessings. Chanting her mantras brings peace, positive energy, and prosperity.
Aarti is another essential part of Lakshmi Puja. Wave the diya in front of her image while singing her praises. This final act of devotion symbolizes surrender to her divine grace and invites her loving presence into your life.

5. Recite Mahalakshmi Mantras
Chanting Mahalakshmi mantras with devotion can attract her blessings, helping remove financial obstacles and bringing abundance. One powerful mantra to recite is:

"Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Kamale Kamalalaye Praseed Praseed Shreem Hreem Shreem Om Mahalakshmi Namah"

Chant this mantra at least 108 times daily, especially during Diwali. This mantra is believed to resonate with divine vibrations that invoke her blessings for prosperity, health, and happiness.

6. Prepare and Share Festive Offerings (Prasad)
Food offerings, known as Prasad, hold great significance during Diwali. Offer sweets, fruits, rice, and other delicacies to Maa Mahalakshmi as a token of gratitude. After the puja, distribute this Prasad to family members, friends, and guests, sharing the divine blessings.

Some people also make kheer (sweet rice pudding) and laddoos as these are beloved by the goddess. Sharing Prasad symbolizes community, kindness, and goodwill, spreading the blessings of Diwali to everyone.

7. Practice Generosity and Charity
Generosity is highly valued by Maa Mahalakshmi. Diwali is a time to practice Daan (charity) by helping the less fortunate, giving alms, or supporting local artisans by buying handmade lamps or gifts. Acts of kindness open up the heart to receive divine blessings and abundance.
