Valak and the History of Scary Nuns
Why make Valak take the form of a nun? It might not matter to the story but boy does it matter to me. Nuns have been depicted as scary in pop culture for decades, and Valak is only the most recent culmination of our cultural suspicion of them, a suspicion rooted in anti-Catholicism, patriarchy, and, yes, some genuine creepy Catholic things.
