"Nun freut euch, lieben Christen g'mein" (Dear Christians, One and All, Rejoice) is a Lutheran hymn, the lyrics and melody of which were both written by Martin Luther.
In Bach’s hands it becomes an exhilarating organ chorale prelude - the right hand chasing itself through a long string of semiquavers, above a jaunty left hand bass line. The notes of the chorale appear in the centre of the musical texture, but played on the organ pedals.
It is no wonder that this work attracted the Italian composer and Bach fan Ferruccio Busoni as a candidate for transcription for the piano. Without modifying Bach’s original beyond the necessary, it becomes a dazzling show piece suitable as an encore.
