Learn beginner Japanese through anime, music, and story. 「どこですか?」 (Where Is It?) is an original anime-style Japanese song designed as comprehensible input for beginner Japanese learners.
Follow Leo Carter on another morning at school in Japan as Maaya helps him learn his way around campus. This time, Leo is learning how to ask where places are — and how to understand whether something is here, there, or over there. As the school gradually becomes less confusing, one place catches Maaya’s attention a little longer than the others: the music room.
This song focuses on simple, high-frequency Japanese for asking about locations and navigating a school, including:
学校です — It’s a school
ここはいりぐち — The entrance is here
きょうしつはどこですか? — Where is the classroom?
そこです — It’s there
としょかんはどこですか? — Where is the library?
あそこです — It’s over there
ここはきょうしつ — This is the classroom / The classroom is here
そこはとしょかん — That is the library / The library is there
これはとしょかんの本 — This is a library book
あそこはじむしつです — The office is over there
友だちのハルトです — That’s my friend Haruto
トイレはどこですか? — Where is the restroom?
上です — It’s upstairs
あそこは? — What’s over there?
おんがくしつです — It’s the music room
おんがくしつはどこですか? — Where is the music room?
あそこです — It’s over there
Grammar and language focus:
ここ • そこ • あそこ
どこ • どこですか?
ここです • そこです • あそこです
は — topic marker
の — possession / relationship
上 — upstairs / above
学校 • いりぐち • きょうしつ • としょかん • 本 • じむしつ • 友だち • トイレ • おんがくしつ
The Japanese is intentionally clear, repetitive, and supported by the visuals, so you can understand the meaning through context instead of translating every word.
Watch how Leo and Maaya physically move through the school. ここ is used for places close to the speaker, そこ for places a little farther away or near the other person, and あそこ for places farther in the distance. The hallway, stairs, library, office, and music room make those spatial relationships visible while you listen.
The story also gives the grammar a reason to exist. Leo begins the day still looking around and relying on Maaya for directions. By the final chorus, he is starting to recognize the school for himself — including the music room, a place that seems to mean something more to Maaya.
