Leviticus 25:1.8-17
The Lord said to Moses on Mount Sinai: "You shall count for yourself seven sabbath years, that is, seven times seven years, so that the period of seven sabbath years shall be forty-nine years. On the tenth day of the seventh month you shall blow the horn. On the Day of Atonement you shall blow the horn throughout your land. You shall celebrate the fiftieth year, proclaiming liberty in the land for all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you—each of you shall return to his property, and each of you shall return to his clans. This entire fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you—you shall not sow, reap what grows, or gather untrimmed grapes. For it shall be a jubilee for you; it shall be holy to you. But you shall eat what grows in the field.
In this jubilee year, each of you shall return to his property. Therefore, when you sell to your neighbor or buy from your neighbor, you shall not wrong one another. But according to the number of years that have passed since the jubilee, you shall buy from your neighbor, and he shall sell to you according to the number of years of harvest. The more years remaining until the jubilee, the greater the price you shall pay; the fewer years remaining, the less the price you shall pay, because of the amount of harvest he sells to you.
You shall not wrong one another. You shall fear your God, for I am the Lord your God."
Mt 14:1-12
At that time, the news about Jesus reached Herod the tetrarch. He said to his officials, "This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead, and that is why these miracles are at work in him."
Herod had arrested John and bound him and thrown him into prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. John had warned him, "It is not lawful for you to keep her." He would have gladly killed him, but he feared the people because he was considered a prophet.
Now when Herod's birthday was being celebrated, Herodias' daughter danced before the guests and pleased Herod. He promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. Now, having been persuaded by her mother, she had said, "Give me here the head of John the Baptist on a platter." The king was distressed. But because of his oaths and his guests, he ordered it to be given to her. So he sent an executioner and had John beheaded in the prison. His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother.
Then John's disciples came and took his body and buried it; then they went and reported it to Jesus.
