Welcome to another processing example from LetsImage.com!
This image was so unplanned! My housemate did the honor and just walked randomly along the beach around Dublin and I just took the lucky shot. The processing was good fun and actually quite simple as well. After getting rid of some stuff in the image, I just had to add the light and the shadow and change the sky. Done! So here is what I did:
Remove the dog!
Yes, she had to go (0:45 min). I selected the Spot Healing Brush Tool and just clicked her out.
Desaturate
Quick - either press CMD+Shift+U on your keyboard, or create a new Hue/Saturation layer and lower the saturation (1:25 min).
Adjust the blacks and the whites
Having brighter parts in the ground, I wanted to make them pop a little. The first step was therefore to adjust my levels (2:05 min).
Bringing back the sky
The adjustment we made for the ground is now also in the sky, which we don't want. So, I inverted the effect (CMD+I) and pressed b for the brush. I then brought the effect back into the ground (3:00 min).
Adding light
I tried to make it look like the person walks towards light. Therefore, I went to Filter-Render-Lighting Effect and selected spot light (3:30 min). Good!
Adjusting the sky and adding clouds
First I reduced the brightness in the sky (5:00 min) and increased the contrast using the usual curve and contrast adjustment. Then I chose one of the clouds which looked nice and selected the clone stamp tool (5:45 min). Why? I wanted to give the impression of a 'thing' which grabs around the light source, like alien arms or so. But for this I needed claws or arms or so - so why not making them using the clouds? I created a new layer (CMD+alt+Shift+N) and used the clone stamp tool to copy a cool cloud. Twice. Then, using the move tool, it was just a matter of repositioning them (6:25 min). Then I used the smudge tool to smooth the new clouds out a little (8:05 min).
Creating a shadow
The person didn't have a great shadow in the original. Because there was no light! So now with more light, we need more shadow. So I created a new layer (CMD+alt+Shift+N) and used the clone stamp tool to copy the person (11:10 min). Then u made that new person black (brightness down!) and turned it, using the move tool (V on the keyboard). To make the shadow fit to the ground, I used some more complicated stuff, just have a look at the video :) I then selected the layer with the shadow and reduced its opacity until it looked real enough.
Finish the ground
There still wasn't enough brightness in the sky - so to get that fixed, I used another level adjustment layer and changed it to my liking (18:30 min). Then I inverted this effect and used the brush to get the effect into the ground (as described before).
Sharpening and de-noising (thats a word?)
I have shown these techniques quite often, so have a look at the video to see how to do these things quickly (20:00 min). Thats it!
