Blind openings in printed circuit boards (PCBs) are sometimes needed for a wide variety of reasons such as; keeping the height of assembled boards lower, connecting components directly to specific signals or power layers without stacking vias, for creating recessed/embedded chips which require shorter wire-bonding connections for chip-on-board assembly or edge connectors to provide better mechanical stability and lower profile, for opening RF antennae on an inner layer of a multilayer design, to apply optical fiber or connection to the board or to access inner layers at certain locations.
Such pockets in PCBs can be processed together with layout design with LPKF ProtoLaser U4.
