America’s favorite sandwich is honored every year on Sept. 18 with a melted slice of cheese. That's because it’s National Cheeseburger Day! There are many theories to the origins of the cheeseburger dating back to almost a century ago. A 16 year old Lionel Sternberger is said to have invented the cheeseburger in 1926 when he was working as a fry cook at his father's sandwich shop, and experimentally dropped a slab of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger.
