Drugs: Docusate
Mechanism of action: Decrease surface tension of stool which allows mixing of water with stool. This makes the stool soft which is easy to pass It takes 1-3 days to work.
Use: prophylaxis of constipation and decrease straining at defecation.
Adverse events: nausea, cramp, abdominal pain, hepatotoxicity on prolonged use.
It disrupts the mucosal barrier and increases absorption of many non-absorbable drugs i.e. liquid paraffin so both should not be used together.
