The pressure on our psychiatry is enormous because we do not want to accept ordinary suffering.
Suffering is part of life, says Professor of Psychiatry Damiaan Denys. But modern man struggles to cope with it. Grief, loneliness, boredom – for almost every form of adversity, people seek help from a psychologist or psychiatrist. And they provide that help. Consequently, the profession has less and less time for genuine psychiatric patients – with psychoses, schizophrenia, and depression. Waiting lists are long, and institutions are overloaded. According to Denys, the pressure on psychiatry is a symptom of a problem in society. Damiaan Denys thinks, treats, and investigates shortcomings in life by navigating between philosophy, psychiatry, and neuroscience. During this evening, he will explain his insights and engage in a discussion with other experts.
