The Usoltsev family—husband, wife, 5-year-old daughter, and corgi—went for a walk along a tourist route in the Krasnoyarsk taiga three weeks ago and disappeared without a trace. 1,500 rescuers with helicopters and quadcopters searched for them, combing kilometers of taiga on the ground and from the air. Not a sock, not a handkerchief, not a trace of a dog's paw, and only a single, localized signal from the head of the family's switched-off cell phone, located completely on the other side of the search zone.
The Usoltsevs' expedition ended in tragedy not because circumstances converged, but because Irina and Sergei's decision-making methods converged. Hunger and cold weren't the only horrors Irina endured in her final hours. The collapse of all her hopes and illusions was no less terrifying.
