Not every multi-axis part looks complex or organic in nature. The majority of multi-axis parts are actually ones that can be done on 3-axis machines but would require multiple setups and orientations on a machine. This is where 3+2 positioning makes a lot of sense. To kick off this topic we'll begin by reviewing and exploring 2 and 3-axis toolpaths before we start moving into 4 and 5-axes.

After completing this lesson, you’ll be able to:

Create a CAM setup for milling.
Use Import Tool Library to add tools to the cloud.
Create 2 and 3-axis toolpaths.


After this lesson 1.1, you'll be able to:

Modify user preferences.
Use Import Tool Library to add tools to the cloud.
Identify components in an assembly.

Computer Numerical Controlled machines, or CNC for short, can have a nearly endless number of options. Most machines today control tool motion in 3-axes, X, Y and Z, but can be upgraded to include a 4th or 5th axis as well, A and B. Additionally, there are many machines on the market that are already 5-axis capable. The good news is that Autodesk® Fusion 360™ has you covered if you need to control multi-axis positioning or simultaneous motion in all 5 axes at once.

Identify 3+2 vs. Simultaneous machining.
