German Army’s Heavy Scout Car (Eyes of the Panzer Division – Part 1)
The trump card of the Recon Battalion was the Schwerer Panzerspähwagen (heavy armoured reconnaissance vehicle).
These vehicles were used throughout the war and first saw combat in the campaign against Poland . Later, they saw use in both the USSR and North Africa campaigns.
The speed of the eight-wheeled cars made them the best scouting vehicles for long-range reconnaissance across the wide territory.
Their armour was designed to provide protection from small arms fire but it was ineffective against heavier weapons and it was not designed to provide protection from anti-tank weapons.
The main armament was an autocannon. This was based on the 20 mm FlaK 30 anti-aircraft gun, and was capable of firing at a cyclic rate of 280 rounds per minute.
The cannon was not designed to defeat enemy tanks. Using high explosive ammunition, was highly effective against infantry and unarmoured vehicles.
