Fun Facts About the "Field Thrush" | Learn Interesting Facts About the Bird!
The field thrush is well-known for its behavior, as well as its varied song and great adaptability. In other words, it is a popular bird not only for the beauty of its plumage, but also for its vast repertoire of songs, which include imitations of other species.
An interesting fact about the field thrush is that it is considered one of the greatest bird mimics. Some of them can reproduce the songs of more than five species. In addition to these imitations, which are used during the mating season, the field thrush also has its own vocalization, which combines characteristic low-pitched and high-pitched calls, beginning or ending its imitations.
Another interesting fact about the field thrush is that it has the characteristic habit of using its tail when perching, especially on high-tension wires. For this reason, the field thrush is often called "tail-lifter" because of its habit of abruptly raising its tail when landing or even when walking on the ground. It is believed that this behavior may reflect the bird's feelings. Interestingly, when the bird encounters potential danger, such as the presence of nearby humans or snakes, it often raises its wings half-open. Although it lives in family flocks, individuals are quite aggressive among themselves, using their long beaks and powerful claws in intense fights, which gives rise to its name, "rooster-of-the-field."
The field thrush is also known as the field rooster, field rooster, lark, tail-lifter, sebo-eater, sebo-caga, tail-lifter thrush, torch-thrush, cattle thrush, conga thrush, and tója. Its scientific name is Mimus saturninus, also known as the Chalk-browed Mockingbird. Therefore, it is a passerine bird of the Mimidae family.
The most important thing to identify the field thrush is to observe its upper body, including its back, head, wings, and tail. Its gray coloration, however, varies from yellowish-white to purplish, due to contact with the ground. The wing feathers are darker, and the most distinctive feature is the white stripe above the eyes, highlighted by the black band around the eye area, which is essential for recognition. Furthermore, the eyes have a yellowish hue, and the tail is long with white tips. It is important to note that the field thrush has a longer neck and legs, a more curved beak, and a very long tail. There are no noticeable differences between males and females.
The Field Thrush is found throughout much of Brazil. Its preferred habitat is fields, savannas, open fields, urban areas, pastures, parks, and vacant lots in cities. They are even seen in flocks, which can be large.
Therefore, the Field Thrush's breeding season is usually between spring and summer. The pair usually builds a shallow bowl-shaped nest with dry twigs, grass, and cotton in trees or shrubs. The female lays 3 to 5 eggs with reddish spots, which are incubated for approximately 13 to 15 days. After the chicks hatch, they are fed until they are ready to leave the nest.
The Field Thrush's favorite food includes small fruits from trees and shrubs such as papaya, banana, fig, blackberry, Surinam cherry, guava, and fruits from native plants. Insects and small invertebrates such as ants, termites, beetles, crickets, grasshoppers, and caterpillars are widely consumed. They also feed on earthworms and spiders. Although seeds and grains are not their main food, they can consume small seeds, especially in times of scarcity.
