Baluarte de San Francisco de Dilao
Also known as the BALUARTE de San Lorenzo de Dilao. Built as one of the main defences on the landslide of Intramuros. Constructed, 1592; reinforced, 1622.
Destroyed during the Second World War; restored, 1984-1988. Forms part of the fortifications of Intramuros. which were declared as a National Historic Monument, 1951; then as a National Cultural Treasure, 2014.
Who is blessed Takayama Ukon and why is he a saint?
Blessed Takayama Ukon was a Roman Catholic kirishitan daimyō, martyr, and a candidate for canonization for sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church.
He was dedicated to his faith and even gave up his position as a daimyō as a result. He is also the only daimyō to be buried on foreign soil.

Bastión de San Francisco de Dilao: Named Dilao because it faced the district of Dilao, a Japanese enclave, east of the walls. Dilao’s original site was probably where San Marcelino Street is. The district was transferred to Paco, and residences demolished after the British had left Manila in 1764.

Constructed as a wooden palisade between 1572- 1575, built by Gov. Gen. Guido de Lavezaris. Demolished for new stone construction: 1590. Constructed in stone: 1590-1593;81 Wall continuously built.

Intramuros [32] (Latin: within the walls) is the historic center and oldest district of Manila, the capital city of the Philippines.

Also known as the Ciudad Murada (Walled City) because of its most famous feature: a nearly three-mile-long circuit of massive stone walls and fortifications that almost completely surrounds the entire district.

Built-in 1592 by the Spanish government to deter threats and invasion by other countries. Renovated in 1622. The area was much larger than what it is right now, the area that you'll see is the restored structure, for the whole area was destroyed during the American liberation of Manila from the Japanese occupation in 1845.

---HOW TO GET THERE:
****if you are on a walking trip, from the CENTRA LRT STATION, walk pass the Manila City Hall take the pedestrian underpass and enter the gate through the walled city of Intramuros. At the left before the entrance is Revellin De Recoletos and at the right is Baluarte de Dilao which is accessible once inside the wall.
