Yellow Chromate ions are in equilibrium with Orange Dichromate ions in aqueous solution.
If you add acid (like HCl, hydrochloric), the equilibrium shifts RIGHT and the solutions becomes more orange.
If you add NaOH (or any other base), H+ will be consumed and the reaction will shift LEFT (less orange, more yellow)
If you add Ba(NO3)2, barium nitrate, it will precipitate with the chromate, and pull the equilibrium to the left (less orange).
