FLOW Protocol: The Self-Distributing Ethereum Token
Flow Protocol is an Ethereum based protocol with a self-distributing store of value. It aims to address current challenges faced by Bitcoin and the DeFI space. The current Bitcoin model (inadvertently) punishes holders where their share of the supply is continuously diluted due to inflation (which is rewarded to miners). Instead, the Flow protocol distributes inflation of the token FLOW to all holders daily at 22:01:34 UTC without the need for a transaction. This is known as the SURGE. This means that token holders are not required to participate in mining or staking to receive a portion of the inflating supply.
Inflation of Flow is over a 10-year period, ending with a capped supply. This follows a similar format to Bitcoin, with halving cycles. These Flow halving cycles are governed by eras. A genesis era of 60 days sees an inflation rate of 1% being deposited into holders’ wallets each day. Each following era is 365 days long. So, after the genesis era (October 10th 2020, 22:01:34 UTC) , holders gain 0.50% of their current Flow balance each day for the 365 days of era 1. For the following 365 days, era 2, the inflation of Flow is 0.25% per day, and so on.
Most DeFI applications, such as lending or borrowing, require users to choose between depositing capital as collateral or staking (and thereby avoiding dilution from inflation). The Flow Protocol solves this issue, serving as a store of value that does not lose value from dilution while users are still able to lock (deposit) their FLOW into another smart contract. The amount of locked FLOW tokens will continue to grow daily and belong to the holder when the funds are unlocked and returned to their wallet.
