🧰 Materials Required
To build this DIY USB-powered soldering iron, you’ll need the following components:

Components:
5W or 10W ceramic wirewound resistor (value: 1Ω–10Ω, based on heat requirement)

Copper wire or iron nail (to use as the soldering tip)

USB cable (or USB male connector)

Insulated electrical wire

Heat-resistant tube (optional)

Insulation tape or heat shrink tubing

Small switch (optional)

Hot glue or super glue

Tools Needed:
Wire stripper

Cutter or plier

Soldering wire (for testing)

Sandpaper (to clean the soldering tip)



🏗 Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Heating Element
Take a ceramic resistor of 5W–10W. The lower the resistance, the higher the current and heat. A 5Ω 10W resistor is usually sufficient.

Wrap one end of a cleaned iron nail or copper wire around the resistor tightly. This will serve as your soldering tip.

Step 2: Solder Wires to the Resistor
Connect two pieces of insulated wire to both ends of the resistor. Use a strong mechanical joint and optionally solder them for a secure connection. Insulate them using heat shrink tubing or tape.

Step 3: Attach to USB Power
Connect the other ends of the wires to the 5V and GND wires of a USB cable. Most USB wires have the following color code:

Red = +5V

Black = GND

Carefully strip and join these wires. Use proper insulation to prevent short circuits.

✔️ Optional: Add a small on/off switch between the +5V line to control power easily.

Step 4: Mount and Secure
Use a heat-resistant tube, pen casing, or thick plastic pipe to enclose the resistor and wires safely. Leave only the soldering tip exposed. Secure all joints with glue and insulation to prevent burns or accidents.
