Inkscape Beginner Tutorial: Creating Custom Subtitles/Text + Gradients
inkscape is freeware, download the latest version via official site: https://inkscape.org/en/
If you want patterned text like in the thumbnail you can choose "pattern" which is one of the right hand options found under fill and stroke 'paint' options (see 10:25, its the option to the right of the
gradients). In other words if you remember: we chose solid as our paint option for the fill, then for the stroke we chose solid as well (which just applies a solid colour), and how I said you can choose gradients as well via that section. Well you can choose "pattern" to the right of the gradients and apply one of the presets...then couple that with a stroke style and filter for interesting effect.
This video meant to supplement the blender VSE tutorial series. The video it goes with will be out tomorrow hopefully. Just edited this one first is all...easier.

If this is too simplistic for a tutorial, let me know and I won't do stuff like this anymore.
Just note: It's not about the end result (which is pretty lackluster looking), it's the process via inkscape. Once you know the process you can make something more complicated/interesting on your own. I mean I think its more useful to learn the outline of a process than simply copy something really complicated and cool looking and get crushed by the sheer weight of information and being unable to apply it in meaningful ways on your own....like I do with blender 3d fireworks and other 3d tutorials that are wayyy too friggin confusing for a new guy like me.
