Yusuke Urameshi and Yu Yu Hakusho are so much more than just a power fantasy shonen. Like most shonen, Yu Yu Hakusho is trying to convey something to its audience, and that message is something the world still struggles with 30 years later.

Yu Yu Hakusho is a shonen based in the realism of what masculinity means and because of that, its main character, Yusuke Urameshi, is unbelievably important. It's Yusuke's personality, struggle, and choices that show young men that masculinity isn't just about how strong you are or how stoic you are, but that a real man is someone with feelings and emotions and does the right thing. Yusuke is a much more well rounded and realistic protagonist than many shonen characters of that time period, and Yusuke's example of what a shonen protagonist can be has really become closer to the norm for what we see in anime characters today.
