7 Beginner Java Programmer Mistakes
Stepping into the world of Java programming and wondering if you’ve made the right decision? Well, we’ve all been there! Since the initial phase is difficult, we end up making simple mistakes and mess up our codes in the silliest possible ways. But here’s the deal – it does get better with time. The more you code, the better you get at writing error-free, clean codes.
Today we’ll be talking about the most common beginner Java programmer mistakes.
Mistake 1: Brushing Aside the Basics
Again, we’ve all done this until we learned that it’s the basics that help us in the long run. As someone who has just started coding, you need to understand that the basics are the backbone of every programming language out there. Lack of conceptual clarity will only end up with you being more frustrated every time you write a code that does not run smoothly. Nailing the hows and whys of programming will help you know how it functions, helping you write neat codes with minimum to almost no errors.
Mistake 2: Piling Up Doubts
Skepticism is the best teacher and the same applies to coding, too. You can’t be a programmer (that too one who has just started out) and not have doubts, questions and queries. Piling up all of these will only end up confusing you more as you move ahead in your coding journey. Instead, get them clarified right then and there.
Find yourself an experienced mentor or sign up on an online coding platform where you can get your questions sorted on a real-time basis. Once you are clear with a set of doubts, try them out for yourself. After you’re sure about the clarity you have achieved, move to learn something new. Sticking to one or two information resources would also be helpful, rather than referring to a hundred different resources out there.
Mistake 3: Only Mugging Up Theoretical Concepts
Implementing theoretical concepts is just as important as mugging them up. Merely watching someone code or reading about it is not going to take you anywhere. It will take you a far longer time to churn out amazing codes at this pace. So instead of waiting and watching, simply start practicing coding.
Whenever you learn a new concept from a book or a video, try it out. See for yourself how it works and you’ll be able to retain it in a better way for a longer time. Also, take it easy as you start implementing the codes – start with the simple tasks that would slowly and steadily build your confidence.
Mistake 4: Coding Alone
Why code alone when you can code with a set of like-minded people? Trust us, it’s more fun that way! As a beginner, you may hesitate to head to such events, but once you’re there, you’ll have a ball of a time – after all, you’ll be in the presence of fellow coders who are just as passionate about coding as you are! These events are not only networking hotspots, but will also help hone your coding skills. Now that’s a perfect win-win situation for newbies.
Mistake 5: Getting Frustrated Because of the Errors
Whether it is coding or any other new skill you take up, in the beginning, it’s always difficult. In the initial phases, you may end up seeing the ‘error message’ on the screen endless times, courtesy of the little mistakes you make. But does this mean you get frustrated and give up? Not at all! In fact, you need to use every ‘error message’ as an opportunity to learn. Knowing where you are going wrong and working on it – that’s something a new coder should do so that you don’t end up repeating the mistakes over again.
We also look at Not Practicing Coding Enough and Goal-less Learning
Learning is a gradual process and we need to have fun along the way, too; only then will we truly fall in love with coding. As a coding newbie, getting intimidated (of professionals who churn out impeccable codes and coding itself) is completely normal – but it's how you find your way to the top that matters! So get started with polishing those coding skills, we’re sure you’ll be able to write excellent, error-free codes pretty soon!
