Denali National Park is one of Alaska’s crown jewels, but visiting takes planning. ▫️ Denali National Park Transit Bus
• $33 hop-on, hop-off option (vs. $150 narrated tour).
• Goes to ~mile 41, currently the farthest point due to a landslide.
• Private vehicles only allowed first 15 miles to Savage River.
• Stops for wildlife sightings (brown bears, caribou, moose, sheep, ptarmigan).
• Cultural Insight: The name Denali comes from the Koyukon Athabascans and means “The High One.” At 20,310 ft, it’s North America’s tallest peak. It was renamed Mount McKinley in 1896 by prospectors, but in 2015 the U.S. restored its official name to Denali. Some still call it McKinley, but out of respect for Alaska Native peoples, we use Denali.

• Only ~30% of visitors get a clear view of the peak.

▫️ RV Parking: Boondocking along the highway near the park entrance; inside and outside campgrounds available.
▫️ Food Costs: Slightly higher than average Alaska pricing.
▫️ Saving Money: The $33 transit bus is the best deal—same distance as narrated, but self-guided.
▫️ Pets: Not allowed on buses or at kennels. Pete stayed in the van with shade, vents, and calming meds for safety.
▫️ Wildlife: Most sightings are at a distance; more moose often seen outside the park.
