Back in the day, our team "The Platform Strategy Group" was tasked with trying to make Don Box's theories on platform agnostic communication a reality. The challenge was given to us by Bill Gates to create such a communication tool for not only platform agnostic communication, but software language agnostic abilities as well, while allowing the simplicity of RAD development. We created something called SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), now commonly known, (and evolved) into / as Web Services. At the time of this video, we hadn't even launched .NET yet. C# was a language we were using internally, but it hadn't been released to the public yet. I was one of two developers on this project, and it really took off after this.
