Rockstar Leeds had to pull off an absolute engineering miracle. And let's be real, their biggest enemy wasn't the PSP's lack of RAM—it was the UMD disc drive! If the PSP's laser had to load the city constantly like the PS2 did, the battery would melt in 30 minutes and the game would freeze on every single corner.

In this video, I'm breaking down every bizarre technical hack and insane trick Rockstar used to make Liberty City Stories run:
The UMD Disc Trick: Remember those clicking sounds your PSP made? The game engine literally "predicted" where you were driving, filled up the 32MB of RAM, and then turned off the disc drive to save battery! Bizarre!
Locked Hardware: Sony was so terrified of the PSP battery dying fast that they locked the processor at 222 MHz. Rockstar literally built this massive GTA using only 66% of the console's actual power.
The Fog & LOD Illusion: To prevent the PSP from exploding, Rockstar used a genius "fog blending" technique and simplified any car that was over 200 meters away, turning them into flat 2D cardboard cutouts to save processing cycles.
The Secret of the Ferries: Rockstar used ferries instead of bridges to connect the islands. Why? Because while your character is standing on a ferry in the middle of the water, the processor is barely doing any work, giving the UMD disc enough time to load the next island without freezing the game! It’s the perfect disguised loading screen!
