A Digital Media Art Student from China Created This Electronic Music Visual
This is my undergraduate graduation project from the Digital Media Arts program in Mainland China — an audiovisual performance project combining electronic music and stage visuals.
As a young digital artist from China, I wanted to explore how sound can be transformed into visual experiences. I believe that visuals are not simply decorations for music; they are another form of expression that originates from sound and can reshape the way audiences perceive it.
Through motion graphics, typography, and stage visuals, this project attempts to let audiences “see” the movement, rhythm, and emotions hidden within electronic music.
For the opening sequence, I used iconic computer system sounds from the early digital era — including old CRT computer startup sounds, Windows 97/98 boot sounds, and Windows XP shutdown notifications. These familiar sounds represent a collective digital memory: a nostalgic era that was slightly slow, imperfect, yet full of character.
The pixel-style visuals were inspired by early computer interfaces and retro game aesthetics. They create the feeling of a strange digital instruction manual — familiar, humorous, and slightly surreal.
The music selection also has a special story behind it. The intro sample of this Goa track comes from a 1960s American child safety song called “Songs of Safety.” While searching for the original sample, I found a YouTube comment describing the song as:
“Perfect for closing time at a bar.”
That unexpected contrast between a serious safety song and electronic music made me laugh — and it became one of the inspirations behind this visual interpretation.
This project represents my exploration of the relationship between sound, image, memory, and technology.
