While in Mostar, we took a day trip to visit the town of Blagaj. This place is famous for its dervish monastery (Blagaj Tekija or Blagaj Tekke) which sits at the foot of a cliff and next to the emerald green waters of the Buna River. Getting from Mostar to Blagaj is pretty easy (if you don't miss the infrequent bus connections like we did) - it's only 30 minutes by public transit and you can take bus # 11, 12, or 13 to get there. Be sure to check the schedule of the bus as we had the wrong information online and we ended up waiting over an hour to catch it coming to Blagaj from Mostar.
Also, be warned the food is REALLY BAD in Blagaj by the monastery. It was the worst meal we've had all year in Europe with stale poneta and water hummus that tasted like nothing at all. All of the restaurants, the five located by the river, have bad reviews so eat in Mostar which has great restaurants. Also keep in mind this is an easy day trip from Mostar and it should take no longer than 1/2 day to visit here including transportation to and from Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

🕌 Blagaj Tekija Day Trip: Dervish Monastery, River Views & Food Fails from Mostar 🇧🇦
🚍 Getting from Mostar to Blagaj
Today we head out on a day trip from Mostar to Blagaj, home of the famous Dervish Monastery (Blagaj Tekke) nestled beneath a dramatic cliff beside the emerald Buna River. This spot is only a short bus ride away, but be warned: bus schedules can be unreliable and out of date! We ended up waiting over an hour—so double-check local times and allow some flexibility.
🥐 Road Snacks & Bus Tips
We start by saying goodbye to our cat friend and grabbing snacks at a bakery—cheese burek is the way to go. To catch the bus, look for the United World College (the big yellow building) and the bus hut in front. Schedules are posted but not always up to date; plan for delays and bring patience!
🍽️ Where Not to Eat in Blagaj
On arrival, we’re hungry but quickly realize none of the restaurants in town serve food at lunchtime. We end up at one of the only open places near the monastery, only to be disappointed: the polenta with cheese is bland, overpriced, and the hummus is (honestly) the worst we’ve ever had. Our advice? Eat in Mostar before you come or bring your own snacks. The food here is for tourists—expensive and underwhelming. If you need supplies, there is a small grocery store in Blagaj.
🏞️ Visiting Blagaj Tekija: The Dervish Monastery
The highlight is definitely the setting! The Dervish Monastery (Blagaj Tekke) dates back to the 1520s, with Ottoman and Mediterranean touches, perched dramatically by the river and beneath towering cliffs. Dress code is enforced: men must wear long pants, women should bring a scarf or use one provided on site. We tour the simple, carpeted interior, but the real wow factor is the view from outside—absolutely stunning for photos.
In summer, you can take a short boat ride into the cave, but in late autumn we just soak up the views and foliage.
📝 Final Thoughts & Insider Tips
Blagaj Tekija is beautiful from the outside, but the inside is modest—think carpets and a few religious artifacts.
Best advice: Eat before coming, or self-cater with snacks from Mostar or the local grocery store.
Allow about an hour to explore, snap photos, and walk around both sides of the river for the best views.
Double-check bus schedules and give yourself extra time; we waited over an hour for our bus there and almost missed our return.
If you want to visit a more detailed historic home, we actually preferred the Turkish House back in Mostar.

Good morning guys. Today is a day trip day. Yeah. We are going to Blagaj which is basically like a monastery in a cave by a river. Something like that. It looks beautiful. Basically and it is so close to where we are staying in Mostar.
We stopped at a bakery along the way to pick up a snack for the road, and then we crossed the bridge to the west side of Mostar to catch the bus to Blagaj.
