But for murre chicks, this isn't just a jump; it's their only chance of survival. The reason is that when a chick is about three weeks old, its parents stop feeding it, forcing it to jump off the cliff. Left high above, surrounded by predators and without food, it will simply die. The baby must jump into the sea, even if it can't fly yet.
