The surreal short film Catatonia was made for HSC Extension 2 English. The primary influences were: André Breton and Salvador Dalí's Un Chien Andalou (1927), the first surrealist film, David Lynch's Eraserhead (1977) and Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927).

In my short film Catatonia, I aim to “deinstitutionalize” the mind through the deep penetration into the unconscious of the audience, the characters and myself. Inspired by both my own families struggles with schizophrenia and the National Association of Practising Psychiatrists findings that the “care of mentally ill individuals is a disgrace”, I intentionally critique mass institutionalization of the mentally ill through my use of a jarring editing style and an embracing of a surrealist dadaistic aesthetic.

Scored 48/50.
