As of 1985, Mikhail Gorbachev's USSR committed to Perestroika. This reform policy would lead to the gradual collapse of the Soviet bloc. In 1989, East Germany, in turn, was touched by this desire for freedom. The photographs taken by Wolfgang Thomas, an East German railwayman, bear witness to this period. He lived in Berlin, a town cut in two by a wall since 1961. In early 1989, nobody could have imagined the collapse of the East-German regime. Yet a few weeks would suffice to bring down the Berlin wall. A year after it fell, Germany was reunited. Wolfgang, couldn't believe his eyes as he saw his country, the GDR, disappear. A new chapter of world history had commenced.
