VLOGMAS DAY 18!! 🇲🇽 ✈️ 😬 LEAVING MEXICO & AIRPLANE ISSUES

We wake up early for one final sunrise over the ocean, sit out on the patio, and soak up the last few quiet minutes of our jungle–beach villa. Brett sneaks in a quick dip in our pool before we head up for one more breakfast and then start packing. The golf cart is scheduled to grab our bags and it’s officially time to say goodbye to paradise and hello to real life again.

Before we leave, we do a rapid-fire recap of the trip:
Favorite part of the room: the skylight and our private pool (that we finally got heated correctly on the last night 😅)
Favorite excursion: jet skiing first, then ziplining, then visiting the horses and playing tennis
Best breakfast: Brett’s beloved French toast + amazing fresh fruit 🥭🍍
Top poolside snack: the insane steak nachos with multiple cheeses at the beach club
Best dinner: our final night at Allora, the Italian restaurant right on the beach 🍝🌊 – great food, waves crashing, and stargazing

Then it’s time to head to the airport. Because the resort is over an hour away, we book a private transfer through the property and end up getting to the airport very early. There’s no airline-specific lounge, just a single VIP lounge you can pay to enter (or access with certain credit cards — ours didn’t work). We decide to pay for it… and it’s an experience:
Packed and a little chaotic
Sketchy, Saran-wrapped veggies and a sad salad bar 🥒
A cough that triggered my med school memory of tuberculosis and had me mentally diagnosing strangers in the corner 😬
I bail on the lounge food and go grab Johnny Rockets chicken tenders instead — which might be the most American travel move possible.

We finally board the flight, taxi out toward the runway, and then… suddenly turn away from it. The plane stops, we’re pointed at another aircraft, and the captain comes on to explain there’s a mechanical issue with one of the systems that helps slow the plane down. The actual piece on the plane works, but the sensor in the cockpit isn’t reading it correctly.

Maintenance comes out, inspects everything, and eventually decides to disable that system entirely, explaining that there are multiple ways to slow the plane and this one doesn’t have to be active for a safe landing in Houston. They do paperwork up front while we sit on the tarmac, and we end up with roughly a 2-hour delay — cutting into our already-tight layover to:
Deplane in Houston
Clear customs
Grab our bags
Recheck and try to make our connection back to Minneapolis ✈️

✨ Question of the Day:
👉 What’s your wildest or most stressful travel story? Flight delays, weird lounges, missed connections — tell me everything in the comments so I feel less alone in this one.
