Online: 404 is an open-world survival simulator that puts a refreshing twist on the genre by making your smartphone one of your most important survival tools. In this Steam Next Fest demo we're exploring the world, crafting supplies, managing our health and using the in-game phone to look up recipes, track biometrics and survive the apocalypse.
First impressions are largely positive. The smartphone mechanics are genuinely clever and help the game carve out its own identity, making survival feel much more grounded and immersive. There are a few things I'd like to see improved though. Some areas become unrealistically dark, making it difficult to navigate in a way that feels more frustrating than atmospheric, and enemies occasionally seem to spawn or respawn right in front of you, which breaks immersion. Once everything starts to click, however, there's a genuinely enjoyable survival experience underneath, and despite a few bugs—which are understandable in a demo—I'm looking forward to seeing how Online: 404 develops towards release.
