Ida has to move. Away from her home, her school, and most importantly: away from her friends. She's having a hard time in her new class. One day, her teacher, Miss Cornfield, announces that soon every child in the class will receive a magical animal companion. Of all people, the two outsiders, Ida and Benni, are the first to receive their new companions, who are meant to become friends for life. Ida is paired with Rabbat the fox, and Benni with Henrietta the tortoise. The magical animals can not only talk, but they also each have their own unique personalities.
While Henrietta is a bit slow, she's almost 200 years old and very wise, while Rabbat is as clever as he is witty. Thanks to Rabbat, Ida suddenly becomes the class star, and everyone wants to be her friend. Benni remains an outsider. But at least he can skateboard with Henrietta and share his passion for pirates. There's other excitement at school: items keep disappearing, and a school thief is on the loose! Wild suspicions circulate, and the thrilling search for the culprit begins.
