Some plants trap insects to get more nutrition. They are called insectivorous or carnivorous plants. They are usually green and can prepare their own food, but grow in nitrogen-deficient soil. They trap insects to fulfil their requirement of nitrogen.
Some insectivorous plants are:
Pitcher Plant
It has pitcher-shaped leaves, filled with a digestive fluid and covered with a lid-like leaf. The plant attracts insects with its sweet smell. Once the insect enters, the lid closes, and the insect gets trapped in the fluid and is digested.
Venus Flytrap
The leaves of this plant have tiny, sensitive hair. When the hair are touched by an insect, the leaves snap shut, preventing the insect from escaping. The upper surface of the leaf has glands which secrete some juices to digest the insect.
Sundew Plant
It has sticky movable tentacles with glands. that give out a shiny substance. When an insect lands on the sticky tentacles, it gets stuck. The other tentacles move towards the insect to trap it further. The insect is digested and the nutrients are absorbed.
