An experiment in painting cows black and white stripes was conducted to test one of the key hypotheses explaining the zebra's unusual coloration. Scientists hypothesized that the striped pattern may serve a protective, rather than decorative, function—reducing the number of bites from blood-sucking insects, such as horseflies and flies.

During the study, some cows were artificially painted with contrasting stripes imitating the zebra pattern, after which their behavior and physiological parameters were compared with those of normal animals. The results showed that the number of insect landings on the "dark-skinned" cows decreased significantly—in some cases, by more than 50%. This is due to the peculiarities of insect vision: they rely on polarization and reflection of light, as well as surface contours. The alternating black and white stripes disrupt these signals, creating visual disorientation for the insects and making it difficult to land accurately.

An additional factor is the optical "shimmer" effect produced by the animal's movement. The stripes create a complex visual pattern that interferes with insects' ability to accurately assess the speed and distance to their target. As a result, the likelihood of a bite is significantly reduced.

A reduction in the number of bites directly impacts the cow's physiological state. Less skin irritation and stress lead to lower cortisol levels, normalized behavior, and increased animal comfort. This, in turn, has a positive impact on productivity, including increased milk yield.

Thus, the experiment confirmed that striped coloration can be an effective natural defense mechanism against insects. This discovery has practical implications for agriculture, offering a simple and safe way to improve animal welfare without the use of chemicals.
