Turbo engines run hotter and operate under higher pressure than non-turbo engines. That heat and pressure can cause the fuel-air mixture to ignite too early, creating a condition called "knock" that can damage pistons, valves, or bearings.

Turbo engines designed for 87-octane fuel rely on the ECU and knock sensors to constantly adjust ignition timing to prevent this pre-ignition. That’s how they survive on regular fuel without destroying themselves.

However, when the ECU pulls back timing to protect the engine, combustion becomes slightly less efficient and runs hotter over time, which can contribute to carbon buildup on pistons and valves. The harder you drive, or the hotter the conditions, the more often the ECU has to intervene.

Repeated knock events also create violent pressure spikes that can stress the head gasket. The head gasket seals the space between the cylinder head and block, holding back extreme pressure and heat. When detonation happens, those shockwaves hit the gasket’s sealing surfaces like miniature explosions, gradually wearing them down. Over time, that can lead to leaks, loss of compression, or early gasket failure.
