Philip Glass -The Hours (Godziny)
Komu można polecić Godziny? Miłośnikom muzyki subtelnej i opartej na prostocie. Ludziom, których nie odstraszy wieczne powtarzanie kilku motywów, którzy potrafią znaleźć emocje w takiej konstrukcji. Nie jest to praca prosta w odbiorze, przynajmniej na początku wymaga dość dużego skupienia, żeby słuchacz mógł ulec jej hipnotyzującemu charakterowi (co dla stylu Glassa jest dość charakterystyczne)
@Glass pomimo iż nie miał zbyt wiele czasu i musiał się odwołać do wcześniejszych prac, tu wskazuje się na Metamorphosis 2 i operę Satyagraha, to jednak stworzył dzieło pełne subtelności, w pełni zasłużenie nominowane do Oscara.
Muzyka wykonywana jest przez orkiestrę smyczkową, kwartet smyczkowy, partiami fortepianowymi zajął się zaś znany ze współpracy z Glassem pianista i dyrygent Michael Riessman. Co ciekawe Riessman nagrał je specjalnie na album. Przy oryginalnym nagraniu do filmu pianistą był David Arch.
Tempo muzyki jest dość szybkie, przez co angażuje ona słuchacza. Glass umiejętnie operuje dynamiką, przez co mamy znakomite fragmenty liryczne (Something She Has to Do) i dramatyczne (Morning Passages). Można powiedzieć, że Godziny brzmią bardzo neoklasycznie. Niedawno słusznie zwrócono mi uwagę, że bierze się to głównie z powodu określonych wyborów instrumentalnych, napisane w tym samym roku Naqoyqatsi jest dość podobne, ale można je uznać za awangardowe z powodu zastosowania elektroniki. Philip Glass jest jednym z tych twórców, którzy mówią własnym głosem, i to jest przede wszystkim powód do pochwał nawet, jeśli między jego ścieżkami zachodzą duże podobieństwa. Szkoda że w dobie rzemieślników coraz bardziej brakuje takich artystów jak Glass.
Godziny to bez wątpienia muzyka bardzo emocjonalna, choć wyciszona. W połączeniu z neoklasycyzmem wpasowuje się dokładnie w to, co najbardziej lubię w muzyce filmowej. O ironio, w filmie kompozytora skrytykowano za to, że jest... za mało subtelny. Moim zdaniem partytura w filmie wypada bardzo dobrze, jeśli nie wzorowo. Na płycie urzeka przede wszystkim prostota i elegancja. Nie jest to jednak prostota banalna. Jak wszyscy najlepsi kompozytorzy Philip Glass jest mistrzem detalu. Wielokrotnie opiera swoje partie smyczkowe na dwu- czy trzynutowych motywach, przez co budowana jest dość prosta polifonia.

Who can you recommend Hours for? Lovers of subtle and simplicity music. People who will not be deterred by the eternal repetition of several motifs who can find emotions in such a construction. It is not a simple job, at least at the beginning it requires quite a lot of concentration, so that the listener may succumb to its hypnotizing character (which is quite characteristic for Glass's style)
@Glass, although he did not have much time and had to refer to previous works, it is here that Metamorphosis 2 and the Satyagrah opera are pointed out, but he created a work full of subtlety, fully deservedly nominated for an Oscar.
The music is performed by a string orchestra, a string quartet, and the piano parts are dealt with by the well-known pianist and conductor Michael Riessman. Interestingly, Riessman recorded them especially for the album. David Arch was the pianist at the original recording.
The tempo of the music is quite fast, which makes the listener engage. Glass skillfully operates dynamics, which gives us excellent lyrical fragments (Something She Has to Do) and dramatic (Morning Passages). We can say that the Hours sound very neoclassical. Recently I was rightly reminded that this is mainly due to certain instrumental choices, written in the same year Naqoyqatsi is quite similar, but they can be considered avant-garde due to the use of electronics. Philip Glass is one of those creators who speak with their own voice, and this is above all a reason for praise, even if there are large similarities between his paths. It is a pity that in the age of craftsmen there are more and more artists such as Glass missing.
Hours are undoubtedly very emotional music, though quiet. In combination with neoclassicism, it fits in exactly what I like best in film music. Ironically, in the composer's film, he was criticized for being ... not very subtle. In my opinion, the score in the film is very good, if not exemplary. The plate is captivated by simplicity and elegance. However, this is not trivial. Like all the best composers, Philip Glass is a master of detail.
