Masks are PNG files, this means they have a clear background. Photoshop lets you know when you have a clear background by showing you gray and white checkered boxes as your background.
Once you've created this tutorial on your own, you can save it as a JPG. I would also suggest saving it as a PSD because that is a layered photoshop file. This way if you want to move the layers around later, you can without having to re-create the entire project.
I was told the mask was 'too big' for someone's photos. All my digi scrap products are 300ppi (pixels per inch) unless otherwise specified, the reason is photo printing industry standards. After you make your creation, let's say you want to have it printed by a photo store. The photo store will need 300ppi in order to make a print that is not pixelated and blurry. The best solution is to set your camera to take larger photos. The other (and not so great) option is to make the mask smaller. Remember, the smaller it gets, the more pixelated it will look when printed, even if it isn't looking very pixelated on your computer screen (this is because computer screens like to see things at 72ppi). You can make the mask smaller by selecting the Move Tool and checking the box in the top left menu bar that says Show Transform Controls. Then you can put your photo onto your mask, clip them together, then select the mask layer and when the box shows up around it, grab the edge of the box with your Move Tool and drag the mask smaller (be sure to hold down the Shift button or your mask won't stay in ratio, it will stretch to a funky shape).
