In this class, we delve into the criticism John Locke received after the publication of his famous Letter on Toleration. Far from being unanimously celebrated, his defense of freedom of conscience and the separation of Church and State provoked incisive responses from religious and political sectors.
We specifically analyze the figure of Jonas Proast (1640–1710), an Anglican theologian and staunch opponent of nascent liberalism. His 1690 work, The Argument of the Letter Concerning Toleration Briefly Considered and Answered, represents one of the harshest responses to Locke's theory of toleration.
Through an annotated reading of his texts, we address topics such as:
The legitimacy of the use of force in religious matters.
The moral role of the State in the spiritual guidance of citizens.
The economic instrumentalization of tolerance.
The political roots of punishments for impiety in early modern Europe.
