Footage Shows Troops Catching Russia's Strangest Ever Tank
As the war in Ukraine rages on through the Summer of 2024, footage released on June 17 shows the Ukrainian Armed Forces capturing a curious Russian tank somewhere in the tumultuous Donetsk Oblast.
Members of Ukraine’s 22nd Separate Mechanized Brigade can be seen climbing inside the enemy armored vehicle and taking two Russian soldiers prisoner before slowly trundling back toward the Ukrainian positions, the blue-and-yellow flag flying proudly over their latest battle trophy.
Yet the most interesting thing about the video is undoubtedly the vehicle itself. Apparently inspired by the primitive tanks of World War 1, this machine has been given an unusual addition in the form of a crudely made superstructure of metal sheeting. This giant protective shell has resulted in it being nicknamed the “turtle tank,” though the Ukrainians refer to it as the “barn” due to the fact it almost looks more like a building than a vehicle.
Since making their debut in the conflict, multiple sightings of these modified tanks have been reported along the front lines. The successful capture of this vehicle offers valuable intelligence on Russian attempts to adapt their aging armored fleet to the realities of modern warfare.
