Pepper and Water Experiment | Soap and Pepper Trick
This dancing pepper and water experiment is a fun way to learn and discover the amazing power of surface tension!
Your kids will love doing this soap and pepper trick as they watch pepper floating in water magically and suddenly dance and run to the edges of the water!
Supplies Needed:
Bowl
Water
Pepper
Soap
Cotton Swab
The science behind this super cool pepper and water experiment:
The pepper floats on the top of the water in the beginning thanks to the water molecules that are tightly bonded together. The tight bonds of the water molecules create surface tension on the water and keep the pepper floating.
The real "magic" to this experiment is all in the soap. When you place a drop of soap in the center of the water and pepper, the soap molecules are hydrophobic (meaning they do not like water).
The soap-fearing water molecules race away from the soap to the edge of the bowl in an attempt to get away from the soap molecules.
As the soap and water molecules bounce between each other, the pepper is pushed by the water molecules that are fleeing the soap molecules from the center of the plate and move to the outside!
