Title: Immersive design engineering (SD&A-265)

Abstract: Design Engineering is an innovative field which may include a number of disciplines, such as architecture, chemistry, mechanics, physics and/or textiles. While engineering is usually focusing on the expertise in a single explicit discipline, design approaches problems from the global perspective. Virtual Reality (VR) technologies are currently in the process of being widely adapted in various engineering fields. It is an often-proven fact that the modeling of spatial structures is supported by 3D-stereoscopic visualization and immersive exploration. But does the use of VR technologies also impact top-down approaches like design engineering? Here, we want to explore perspectives of Immersive Design Engineering, by discussing potential application scenarios and illustrating examples.

Biography: Dr Sommer received his BSc in Media Informatics and Design in 2004 from Bielefeld University and Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences (Gestaltung). He continued at Bielefeld University to study for an MA Interdisciplinary Media Sciences, which he finished in 2006. At Bielefeld University, he initiated the CELLmicrocosmos project 'Starting from an animated cell model'. He and his students developed a number of interactive cell exploration and modelling tools. From 2009 to 2015 he was working and teaching as a research assistant in the Bio-/Medical Informatics Department at Bielefeld University while creating a new lecture module 'Interdisciplinary Cell Visualisation and Modelling' and finishing his PhD thesis on Integrative Cell Modelling. Starting in 2015, he worked as a Research Fellow at Monash University in Melbourne and then at the University of Konstanz. Participating in the Immersive Analytics initiative, he developed small-to-large-scale Human-Computer Interaction approaches, as well as visual analytics approaches for collective animal behaviour – using partly Virtual Reality-based technology.
