Southgate unveils latest England squad | Squad Announcment | 2022 World Cup Qualifiers | 2020/21
Gareth Southgate explained the surprise omission of right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold from his 26-man England squad, saying that his performances for Liverpool haven't been up to the standard of the last two seasons.
But three players have been rewarded with call-ups after lengthy absences from the international stage.
John Stones earned his first call-up since November 2019 thanks to his resurgence at Manchester City, while Luke Shaw is in line to add to his eight caps more than two years after his last appearance for England.
Also back in favour is Jesse Lingard who last played for the national team in June 2019.
Jude Bellingham, the 17-year-old midfielder at Borussia Dortmund, was selected but Southgate said that quarantine rules in Germany are likely to rule him out.
This month's World Cup qualifiers - against San Marino, Albania and Poland - will also be an opportunity for Southgate to fine tune his selection for the rescheduled Euro 2020 which starts in June.
