Nostalgia Meets Decay? FC Remscheid's Röntgen Stadium is a renovation project of epic proportions! Fankultur by Torgranate visited the sixth-division club. Stands closed due to the risk of collapse, construction fences, crumbling concrete. So what will happen to the stadium named after Nobel laureate Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen? Will the wrecking ball come and put an end to this stadium bowl? But it's not just the stadium teetering between tradition and the abyss.
FC Remscheid is also facing the abyss and will likely fall back to the seventh division. The club is plagued by a structural crisis: both on and off the pitch. What the club retains is its history. Promotions to the 2nd Bundesliga were glorious, as were victories against Kaiserslautern and Mönchengladbach in the DFB Cup. Even FC Bayern Munich has played in Remscheid, narrowly winning 1-0 in front of 15,000 spectators.
My absolute star guest was Thorsten Legat! "Kasalla" made him famous, and in 2016 the former professional footballer was the coach of FC Remscheid. He spoke with me at his old stomping ground about football. Legat expressed his criticism and shock at the club's decline. This was evident from the fact that only 100 spectators attended the FCR match. The changing rooms, on the other hand, have a retro charm. But for how much longer? A new stadium seems to have been found – and a lot of money is being invested to make it attractive.
