Birthday Boy Turns 40 | Vlogmas Day 19

If you saw the last vlog, you know we got delayed leaving Mexico and ended up missing our connection in Houston thanks to a mechanical issue, a tight layover, and the joy that is customs. Today’s vlog picks up after all of that, with Editing Dan from the future™ jumping in to explain what happened:
Our flight from Puerto Vallarta left ~2 hours late because of a mechanical/sensor issue
We landed in Houston around 7:15 p.m. and our next flight was boarding at 7:25 — absolutely not happening
By the time we got to baggage claim, United had already auto-rebooked us for the next morning
We grabbed a voucher, checked into the Sheraton by the airport, got some food, and crashed
Not exactly how you picture waking up on your 40th birthday… but here we are.The next morning is Brett’s actual birthday 🎂 and we:
Head back to the airport
Hop on a United flight to Minneapolis
Land in Minnesota to cold, wind, and snow flurries
Then we finally get to the best part: Scrap pickup. 🐶 We reunite with our little man, bring him home, and he does the full snuggle + neighborhood patrol like, “Excuse me, who was in my hallway while I was gone?”
Back at the apartment, there’s a pile of packages and Christmas gifts waiting, and I decide the only acceptable way to salvage Brett’s 40th is with a homemade Oreo birthday cake:
DoorDash half the ingredients because absolutely not going to the grocery store
Bake a chocolate cake
Stack and frost everything while trying to keep Scrap out of the kitchen
Decorate it as best I can on a post-travel brain
Wind down on the couch watching a documentary about cartels in Africa, as one does. It’s cozy, imperfect, and very us — and honestly, after days of travel and delays, it feels kind of perfect.
