We would have loved to celebrate the festive opening of the exhibition 'Surinamese School. Painting from Paramaribo to Amsterdam' with you at the museum. Unfortunately, that is not yet possible. Therefore, we invite you to an online preview on the evening before the exhibition opens. During this tour, the exhibition curators will take you through a number of highlights.
Colorful, varied, spiritual, and political. The Surinamese School exhibition is a celebration of Surinamese painting; from landscapes to portraits to political pamphlets. Artists work from Suriname, but there are also those who move to the Netherlands and live and work in Amsterdam, among other places. Who were the key figures, how is Surinamese history depicted, and how is daily life? This and more can now be seen in an exhibition featuring over 100 artworks by 35 artists. With guest curators Jessica de Abreu (anthropologist and co-founder of The Black Archives), Mitchell Esajas (anthropologist and co-founder of New Urban Collective and The Black Archives), Bart Krieger (publicist, independent art historian, and founder of BAM! De Kunst Toko), Ellen de Vries (publicist and independent researcher), Inez Blanca van der Scheer (Stedelijk Museum/project leader STUDIO i), Claire van Els (curator at Stedelijk Museum), and Carlien Lammers (inclusion officer at Stedelijk Museum).
Surinamese School: Painting from Paramaribo to Amsterdam, is on view from December 12 to May 31, 2021, at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
