APS Introduces Mandarin to Elementary
Akron Public Schools has taken a noteworthy step by introducing Mandarin Chinese studies in three of its elementary schools: Pfeiffer, Crouse, and Helen Arnold CLC. This initiative recognizes the global significance of Mandarin, which is spoken by an astounding 927 million people worldwide as their first language.
Pfeiffer Principal Tina McIntyre brought first and second grades with her to do a demonstration for our board at its April 22, 2024 meeting.
By offering Mandarin classes at the elementary level, Akron Public Schools is fostering cultural awareness and equipping young learners with valuable language skills that can open doors to international opportunities.
"This is an initiative I brought here when I started as superintendent. The litmus test in three schools shows us we need to expand this program," said Superintendent Dr. Michael Robinson.
Students who engage with Mandarin will gain insights into Chinese culture, history, and traditions, preparing them for a more interconnected and diverse world. Akron Public Schools, promoting linguistic diversity and enriching the educational experience.
