The post-World War II transitional development of technology gave birth to many unusual aircraft, not all of which found a place in combat units. But the North American F-82 Twin Mustang was an exception. Conceived mid-war as a long-range escort fighter, it never saw combat in the Pacific. However, it became the first aircraft to score kills in the subsequent Korean War, taking on numerous missions in the early stages of the war. Despite the small number of aircraft produced, it served with numerous units over eight years, flying on all coasts of the United States, as well as in Alaska and Japan.
