A druse is a mineral that forms crystallization on its surface. This crystallization can be small, medium, or large.
Perhaps some of you have seen amethyst druse at gemological exhibitions, whose crystals reach very large sizes?
Jewelry druse must be small enough to be used in jewelry, such as a ring or earrings. This is why small druse can be more expensive than larger ones. Another characteristic of druse is its brittleness. Therefore, if improperly processed, a druse can shatter into numerous small crystals.
A jeweler must evaluate the stone, determine the strength of the crystal's bond, and then decide on the jewelry design. Therefore, working with druse requires a great deal of attention.
Many clients ask why my druse isn't perfect, why it's not uniform in color, or why it's not of the same crystallization type? These are works of art created by nature itself!
Setting a druse in a piece of jewelry is a challenging task for a jeweler. It's important that the stone feels comfortable in its setting. When setting, it's important to maintain a slight play in the stone—literally a fraction of a millimeter—so that the setting and prongs don't compress the stone. Otherwise, the stone may crack when worn.
